Mom And The Kids

Bill Fawcett (and you'll see that name yet again before you finish reading these intros) brought me in to coedit and create a space-opera shared universe idea of his: The Fleet. While the concept was deliberately aimed at a younger audience (if you don't entice young SF readers, you won't have any readers in a generation), we had a pretty amazing number of top writers.

Because I'd been working on another project with Larry Niven, I asked him if he'd like to play. He had an idea that would work, but he didn't have time to write it up. He did a rough outline, I wrote the story, and he did a polish draft. We split the credit and the money.

While the stories I did for The Fleet were grim even by my own standards, this story "The Murder of Halley's Comet," had a lighter tone. In fact, it had a light tone. (You could make a case that Dostoyevsky has a lighter tone than some of my stories in the series.) It was fun.

A while later, Larry called with another idea. The process of creation was the same as before, and this time the result–"Mom and the Kids"–was downright funny if you've got the right sort of sense of humor. It proves that I'm perfectly capable of seeing humor in a fictional construct, so long as somebody else points it out to me first.
